NEW YORK - The CW's Monday night comedy series "Girlfriends," the longest-running live action comedy on network television, is ending after eight seasons, the show's creator announced on Thursday.
The series about three friends navigating life and love has been a linchpin of the CW's Monday night lineup, and was previously on UPN. Star Tracee Ellis Ross earned six consecutives NAACP Image Award nominations as best comic actress, winning once.
"Girlfriends" is the second-highest rated series with a predominantly black cast, behind "The Game." The only such show to produce more episodes was "The Cosby Show."
Mara Brock Akil, the show's creator, said in a statement that she was grateful to the "Girlfriends" audience, particularly black women, for seeking the series out each Monday.
Akil said she's in talks with the CW to put together a retrospective show about the series' history.
The show's return this season was in doubt, so much so that Akil wrote a final episode where Ross' character Joan finally got a marriage proposal after some tough years for her love life.

I figured they weren't coming back since they played the Season Finale this past Monday. When I saw that, I knew it was over for "Girlfriends". And just like all of the other shows, it left you hanging. No one knows if Joan's fiance made it home safely from Iraq since he was heading home in a couple of weeks, and we won't see William and Monica have their baby. Oh well. It was good while it lasted, eventhough it started slacking off about 2 seasons ago.
Mannnnnn...... they could have at least gave them another show or two to give it a good ending and not leave everyone hanging. I think the show deserved that much. Gonna miss Girlfriends! At least we still have The Game though.
I just read this on BV. I didn't know they were just going to stop it like that. That writer's strike wasn't a joke. Man I'm pissed b/c I just started getting back into this show in '06 and now it's just gone. I was hoping this would be the last season, actually it should've ended last season b/c that was a great ending, but it's messed up that it was just left up in the air. I wanted to know if Mya and Darnell were going to adopt, I wanted to see Joan's wedding, and the birth of William's baby. This is just phucked up! Just like with the ending of All Of Us and My Wife and Kids...bastids
