Kobe Bryant’s Wife Vanessa Files for Divorce

Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant’s wife Vanessa has filed for divorce after 10 years of marriage.

Court documents cite irreconcilable differences between the couple. Online reports say the couple, who met when Kobe Bryant was 21 and his future wife was 18, had no pre-nuptial agreement, so half of the money Bryant made over his years with the Lakers will go to his wife.

The Bryants have been married since 2001 and have two daughters together: Natalia, 8, and Gianna, 5. According to the legal documents, Vanessa Bryant asked for joint legal and physical custody of the girls when she filed for divorce on Dec. 1, and her husband did the same in response.

“The Bryants have resolved all issues incident to their divorce privately with the assistance of counsel and a judgment dissolving their marital status will be entered in 2012,” read a statement released by a representative for the couple.

In 2003, Bryant was accused of sexually assaulting a 19-year-old woman who worked at a hotel in Colorado where Bryant was staying. Bryant admitted to having sex with the woman, but insisted it was consensual.

Vanessa Bryant stood by her husband during the scandal, releasing a statement that read, “”I know that my husband has made a mistake — the mistake of adultery. He and I will have to deal with that within our marriage, and we will do so. He is not a criminal.”

The charges against Bryant were dropped a year later because the accuser did not want to go ahead with a trial. The NBA star bought his wife a $4 million ring during the scandal.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Wow! So the divorce proceedings have been in effect this entire month, and based on what I just read, they'll be divorced maybe by early next year.  I can see that because Kobe didn't contest the divorce and she'll get her half along with shared custody.  I've been reading that he's cheated on her multiple times throughout their marriage and she's just fed up.  I can't blame her for that because when you get sick and tired of being sick and tired, you have to look out for you and your children.

I can't believe they've been married for over 10 years.  Gosh that time flew by! I really wanted them to make it, simply so Kobe's Dad could eat his words.  That man was so mean towards Kobe and Vanessa when they decided to get married (because she wasn't BLACK!), and was so stubborn that he didn't even show up for the wedding!  In fact, I don't think he came around until the kids were born.

Not only is she entitled to his insurance benefits, but also his social security.

I think Kobe and Vanessa handled their divorce the right way. This really helps to make everything run as smoothly and quickly as possible. It's also good for their kids. My question is, after spousal support, why do you are you still entitled to insurance benefits and social secruity? Actually, I can get over the insurance benefits but I don't think she should be entitled to the SS. That's a bit much in my opinion. And I kind of think that after a certain amount of time, she should be able to to get her own insurance but, that's how the system works.

Plain and simple, it's the law.  Well, I'll say this.  It's the law in the District of Columbia and Maryland.  Can't speak on the state of California, or any other state, really.  But this has been the topic of discussion in the office for the past month or two because my supervisor just remarried back in March.  He has to be married to his new wife for three years in order for her to claim his insurance benefits, and ten years for her to claim his social security.  Right now, his ex-wife gets all of the benefits, but after the three-year period, the ex will no longer serve as the beneficiary.  With social security, his ex-wife is CURRENTLY entitled to all of the benefits, but if he remains married to his second wife for ten years, then both women are entitled.
