A Southlake elementary school was evacuated for more than an hour on Tuesday after a fourth-grader showed up with a hand grenade, authorities said.

The hand grenade brought to Old Union Elementary School in Southlake still had the pin in it, but appeared to be hollow, said Carroll school district spokeswoman Julie Thannum. A bomb squad was called in to remove the device from a classroom.

"The boy wasn't mad at anyone," Cpl. Mike Bedrich of the Southlake Department of Public Safety told the media. "He just thought it would be cool to bring it to school."

Dallas CBS television station KTVT-TV was told that the child got the grenade as a souvenir from someone who had recently returned from Iraq.

The object was determined to be "inert and safe" by the bomb squad, Thannum said. The staff and about 530 students were then returned to the school from a nearby church where they had been evacuated.

Thannum declined to say if any action would be taken against the student.

Lord have mercy. Why would anyone give a child a grenade as a "souvenir"? What brand of people are we dealing with out here in the world today?
