Tiger Woods, the world's top ranked golfer, has become a father for the first time, one day after tying for second at the US Open.

His wife Elin Nordegren gave birth to the baby girl, named Sam Alexis Woods, early Monday, the 31-year-old golfer announced Tuesday on his website, www.tigerwoods.com.

Both mother and daughter are doing well, Woods said.

'This is truly a special time in our lives, and we look forward to introducing Sam to our family and friends over the next few weeks,' Woods added. 'We thank everyone for their well wishes and continued respect of our privacy.'

Woods became a dad less than 24 hours after he tied for second with Jim Furyk, one shot behind Angel Cabrera, at the US Open in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The tournament ended on the day the US celebrates Father's Day.

The winner of 12 majors announced on his 31st birthday in December that he was a father-to-be and had only said the baby was due in July. It was not clear how the birth would affect Woods' upcoming tournament schedule, which includes the British Open July 19-22.

Woods and his Swedish model wife married in 2005.
