Kevin Everett continues to shock doctors after near-fatal on-field collision.

Buffalo Bills tight-end Kevin Everett, who was paralyzed during kickoff in the first game of the 2007 NFL season, has taken his first steps this week after doctors feared he would never walk again.

"This week, with the assistance of a walker, I was able to take steps, and I've been able to move in my wheelchair, both of which are great triumphs for me," he said on the team Web site in his first comments since the injury.

"I maintain a positive attitude and feel fortunate every day that I am alive and well. I value and appreciate the unfailing support of my family, my friends, my doctors, and my fans," he added.

Everett suffered a spinal injury while making a tackle against the Denver Broncos in September and underwent spinal surgery. Doctors, initially pessimistic about his chances of walking, said the 25-year-old has responded well to treatment although it is unclear if he will ever make a full recovery.

"I have shown significant progress in my recovery," said Everett. "But, I am also fully aware that the recovery from the type of injury I have sustained is filled with peaks and valleys. While the road to recovery is long and hard, I am determined to fight through it each and every day."
